BRAY SATISFIED WITH PACE AHEAD OF EURO FINAL THIS WEEKEND
Kiwi kart international Daniel Bray (GP/TM/Bridgestone) has expressed himself satisfied with his pace ahead of the second round of this year's CIK-FIA European Championship meeting for KZ and KZ2 class karts at Genk in Belgium this weekend.
Aucklander Bray, 26, was quick but ultimately unlucky at the first round of this year's two-round European Championship meeting at Wackersdorf in Germany in May and he heads into the first timed practice and qualifying sessions (overnight Thursday/Friday NZ time) keen to again be close to the front of the 107-strong KZ2 class field.
"Yeah," he said as he packed up for the day after testing on Wednesday, "the day went well and we've made some changes (to the kart) for tomorrow."
Bray, the reigning New Zealand Open class champion and 2011 SuperKarts USA S1 class title-holder topped the time sheets in two of his free practice runs before qualifying 12th and finishing third in his first heat race at the opening round of the European Championships in Germany. But after a best placing of third through the heats he was bundled out of the Pre-Final while in ninth place, missing out on a chance of qualifying for the final.
This weekend he is again one of over 100 drivers vying for a spot on the gird in the final in the KZ2 class with the driver he matched time-wise in practice and qualifying, Riccardo Negro (DR/TM/Bridgestone), leading the points standings after winning the Final at Wackersdorf.
The Italian-born German driver is therefore the favourite this weekend from Italian Marco Zanchetta (Maranello/TM/Bridgestone) and Sweden's Joel Johansson (Energy/TM/Bridgestone).
Meanwhile the driver who punted Bray out of the lead of the Final at the CIK-FIA KZ2 World Cup meeting in Italy last year, Max Verstappen (CRG/TM/Bridgestone) from the Netherlands, is the favourite in the premier KZ class this weekend, having beaten countryman Bas Lammers (Intrepid/TM/Bridgestone) to the finish line in that class at Wackersdorf.
