There are many classes available in New Zealand to suit all ages, sizes and abilities.  The Junior classes start from 6 years of age and Seniors from 15 years of age.  Most classes are championship classes however there are also non championship classes which are only contested at Club events and non championship events.  All classes have very strict rules and regulations to ensure all competition is as even as possible. JUNIOR CLASSES
(6 to 17 years of age)

   
CADET
  • Drivers aged 6 years and under 12 years
  • Special cadet chassis which is a smaller version of the full size chassis
  • Racket 85 engine to KartSport New Zealand specs
  • Minimum weight of kart and driver 88kg
  • Pump petrol only

  • Original Radne clutch compulsory

    The purpose of this class is to teach young people to drive karts of restricted performance in a competitive but controlled manner.

JUNIOR RESTRICTED

  • Drivers aged 10 years and under 14 years
  • Full size chassis to KartSport New Zealand specs
  • Yamaha KT100 piston port 100cc 2 stroke engine to KartSport New Zealand specs
  • Limited slip clutch compulsory
  • Restricted box muffler
  • Minimum weight of kart and driver 115kg
  • Pump petrol only
  • Front wheel brakes not permitted
  • KartSport New Zealand Tendered tyres only

    The purpose of this class is a stepping stone between Cadets and Juniors where drivers use a full size chassis but restricted engine.

JUNIOR 100cc YAMAHA

  • Drivers aged 12 years and under 17 years
  • Chassis to KartSport New Zealand specs
  • Yamaha KT100 piston port 100cc 2 stroke engine to KartSport New Zealand specs
  • Limited slip clutch optional
  • Full size muffler
  • Minimum weight of kart and driver 133kg

    This is the main Junior class for all competition in NZ from Club meetings to championship events.

JUNIOR 100cc INTERCONTINENTAL A

  • Drivers aged 12 years and under 17 years

  • Chassis to KartSport New Zealand specs or CIK homologated

  • CIK homologated JICA 100cc piston port engine

  • CIK homologated pipe for the relevant engine

  • Minimum weight of kart and driver 135kg

  • Minimum dry weight of kart 65kg

  • CIK homologated clutch compulsory

  • Side pods, nose cone and front console bodywork compulsory

  • Pump petrol only

  • KartSport New Zealand Tendered tyres only

    This is the Junior International class for top competitors in New Zealand. This class is being phased out and has been replaced by the KF3 class at championship level.

FORMULA JUNIOR

  • Drivers aged 12 years and under 17 years

  • Chassis to KartSport New Zealand specs

  • Eligible engines are :-
    CIK homologated JICA 100cc piston port engine with
    CIK homologated pipe for the relevant engine. CIK homologated clutch compulsory (to be deleted 01-08-10)
    KF3 variant of a KF4 engine as homologated by the CIK. CIK homologated clutch compulsory.

    Any other stock, purpose built kart engine up to 125cc non gearbox and fitted with an engine clutch to the manufacturers specifications. No power valves permitted. KartSport New Zealand must pre approve any engine before use. Approved engines as at 1st January 2009 are - Rotax FR125 Max Junior, Vortex Rok Junior, PRD Fireball (to be deleted 01-08-09).

  • Minimum weight of kart and driver is 145kg

  • Side pods, nose cone and front console bodywork compulsory

  • Pump petrol only

  • KartSport New Zealand Tendered tyres only

    This is an optional Junior class for top competitors in New Zealand allowing a selection of engines. This class in its present form is being phased out and will be replaced with the KF3 class for championship events and a modified Formula Junior class with Rotax Max Junior, Vortex Rok Junior and KF3 engines only for non championship events.

KF3

  • Drivers aged 12 years and under 17 years

  • Chassis to KartSport New Zealand specs

  • Eligible engine is the KF3 variant of a KF4 engine as homologated by the CIK

  • Minimum weight of kart and driver 145kg

  • Minimum dry weight (without fuel) of kart 75kg

  • CIK homologated clutch compulsory

  • Pump petrol only

  • KartSport New Zealand Tendered tyres only

  • This class is implemented 1-8-07 as non championship and 1-8-08 for Championships

    This is the Junior CIK International class for top competitors in New Zealand replacing the Junior 100cc Intercontinental A and the Formula Junior class.

  • Full size muffler
  • Limited slip clutch optional
  • Minimum weight of kart and driver 165kg
  • Pump petrol only
  • Front wheel brakes not permitted
  • KartSport New Zealand Tendered tyres only

    This is a Senior class for all heavier weight national competition in NZ.

FORMULA 100

  • Drivers aged 15 years and over

  • Chassis to KartSport New Zealand specs

  • Any 100cc stock appearing piston port engine (excluding 100cc Yamaha KT100S) or any 100cc Rotary or Reed valve CIK homologated engine (homologation does not have to be current)

  • Single CIK homologated butterfly type carburettor with maximum venturi of 24mm

  • Minimum weight of kart and driver 150kg

  • Pump petrol only

  • CIK homologated tyres as per the KartSport New Zealand tyre list (download here)

    This class is for top level Senior drivers at National and Island championship events. This class is being phased out and has been replaced by the KF2 class at championship level.

KF2

  • Drivers aged 15 years and over

  • Chassis to KartSport New Zealand specs

  • Eligible engine is the KF2 variant of a KF4 engine as homologated by the CIK

  • Minimum weight of kart and driver 156kg

  • Minimum dry weight (without fuel) of kart 75kg

  • CIK homologated clutch compulsory

  • Pump petrol only

  • KartSport New Zealand Tendered tyres only

This is the Senior CIK International class for top competitors in New Zealand replacing the Formula 100 class.

KZ2

  • Drivers aged 15 years and over
  • Chassis to KartSport New Zealand specs or CIK homologated
  • 125cc reed valve engine as homologated by the CIK for the KZ2 class with the homologated gearbox ratios, homologated exhaust and a CIK homologated inlet silencer for the respective engine.
  • Minimum weight of kart and driver 175kg
  • Side pods, nose cone and front console bodywork compulsory
  • Pump petrol only
  • CIK homologated tyres as per the KartSport New Zealand tyre list (download here)

    This is the Senior International class for special events in New Zealand.

125cc ROTAX MAX LIGHT

  • Drivers aged 15 years and over
  • Chassis to KartSport New Zealand specs
  • Bombardier Rotax FR125 MAX engine to KartSport New Zealand specs
  • Minimum weight of kart and driver 160kg
  • Front wheel brakes not permitted
  • Nose cones and side pods compulsory

    This is a 125cc non gearbox 'keystart' class for racing in NZ.

125cc ROTAX MAX HEAVY

  • Drivers aged 15 years and over

  • Bombardier Rotax FR125 MAX engine to KartSport New Zealand specs
  • Minimum weight of kart and driver 185kg
  • Front wheel brakes not permitted
  • Nose cones and side pods compulsory
  • Pump petrol only

    This is a 125cc non gearbox 'keystart' class for heavier competitors racing in NZ.

FORMULA 125S

  • Drivers aged 15 years and over
  • Chassis to KartSport New Zealand specs
  • Any production single cylinder motorcycle engine up to 125cc with a minimum of 3 gears
  • Single carburettor with maximum venturi of 38.5mm
  • Minimum weight of kart and driver 176kg
  • Pump petrol only
  • CIK homologated tyres as per the KartSport New Zealand tyre list (download here)

    This is a Senior 125cc gearbox class for all competition in NZ.

OPEN

  • Drivers aged 15 years and over
  • Chassis to KartSport New Zealand specs
  • Engine or engines with a maximum combined capacity of 250cc
  • Fuel as per KartSport New Zealand Category 1 or 2.
  • Tyres open
  • Minimum weight of kart and driver as per the following :-
    NON GEARBOX :
    100cc rotary or reed - 130kg
    Over 100cc and up to 150cc - 140kg
    Over 150cc and up to 250cc - 160kg
    Up to 250cc 4 Stroke Wankel Rotary Engine - 160kg
    GEARBOX :
    125cc National - 170kg
    Up to 125cc non-motorcycle engines
    - 170kg
    Over 125cc and up to 250cc - 170kg

    This class is designed for all types of engines and is controlled by the above weight restrictions.

    This is a 100cc SuperKart class for all national competition in NZ and is designed to use the standard sprint kart with the addition of a clutch and bodywork.

125cc ROTAX MAX LIGHT

  • Bombardier Rotax FR125MAX engine to KartSport New Zealand specs

NATIONAL

  • Drivers aged 15 years and over
  • Normal sprint kart chassis to KartSport New Zealand specs
  • Maximum wheelbase 1060mm
  • Single carburettor with no restriction on venturi size or shape
  • Clutch compulsory
  • Fuel as per KartSport New Zealand Category 1 or 2.
  • Rear wheel brakes compulsory, front wheel brakes optional
  • Tyres open but must have the appropriate speed rating
  • Body work (nose cones, front panels etc) optional but encouraged
  • Eligible engines and weight as per the following :-
    Any production single cylinder motorcycle engine up to 125cc with a minimum of 3 gears - minimum weight or kart and driver 175kg.
    Any production single cylinder motorcycle engine up to 250cc with a minimum of 3 gears - minimum weight or kart and driver 195kg:-
    KZ2/Formula C 125cc engine as previously or currently homologated by the CIK. Engines must use the homologated gearbox ratios and exhaust for the respective engine - minimum weight or kart and driver 175kg.
    Non-Gearbox up to 250cc (i.e. Wankel, Biland or other) - minimum weight or kart and driver 175kg.

    This is a SuperKart class for all national competition in NZ and is designed to use the standard sprint kart with the addition of a clutch and bodywork.

INTERNATIONAL

  • Drivers aged 15 years and over
  • Special Superkart chassis to KartSport New Zealand specs
  • Any engine or combination of engines not exceeding 250cc
  • Clutch compulsory
  • Minimum weight of kart and driver - 2 or more cylinders 210kg, 1 cylinder 195kg.
  • Fuel as per KartSport New Zealand Category 1 or 2.
  • Two independent brake systems
  • Tyres open - rear wheels must be fitted with bead locks
  • Body work (nose cones, front panels etc) optional but highly recommended and encouraged

    This is a special dedicated International SuperKart class only for all national competition in NZ.

MIDGET

    This is a budget entry level class only.  The  purpose of this class is to let young people try kartsport in a restricted controlled manner without undue investment or competitiveness.

100cc YAMAHA CLUB CLASS

  • Maximum licence rating 'C'

    This is a special entry level Senior class for non championship Club racing in NZ.
