A somewhat shortened 2011 City of Sails 2-Day Challenge was contested at Kartsport Auckland’s Moselle Panel & Paint Raceway on Saturday January 22nd. |

Mother Nature, in the form of a “Weather Bomb”, won all the heats on Sunday. The quantity of water pouring from the heavens flooded an area of the track & the combination of a high tide ensured that the water stayed put. A selection of drivers from the junior ranks made the most of the newly created swimming area, much to the chagrin of their parents, & had a wonderful time. Therefore the meeting was declared, results posted & the techies got down to business. Saturday’s racing was run in the anti-clockwise direction & was fine & dry until round 3 of the heats. First up was Formula Junior & this was the first of the track records to get hammered. Reid Harker & Luke Dobbs traded fastest times with Dobbs holding sway at the end of the day, although it was Harker taking the event win from Dobbs & Joel Herbert in third. It was a similar scenario with Rotax Heavy with Bay of Plenty’s Stuart Gould now the track record holder for this class; but conceding the class win to Anthony Murch. And yet another track record tumbled; this time in Cadet Class. Over the four heats it was shared between Dylan Smith, Brad Wilson & Liam Lawson; at times only for the few seconds it took for the next driver to cross the line! Lawson came out with this honour for the day. Class win honours went to Lee Zeltwanger from Dylan Smith & Brad Wilson. Current North Island title holder Daniel Kinsman stamped his authority on Yamaha Light with 4 wins from 4 starts, taking the class win from Arthur Gabb & Hamilton’s Stan Tangaroa-Green. Rotax Light saw Daniel Connor make it consecutive wins at this event for 2010 & 2011. Michael Bird took second place honours & Andy Schofield, newly moved to the senior ranks, finished third. Junior Restricted saw the track record slaughtered multiple times – AGAIN! Thomas Joyes is now the proud holder of the track record & is the 2011 City of Sails JR Champ. The competition was tough, but. Behind Thomas was a gaggle of Aucklanders – Arran Crighton & Alex Edwards tied for second overall & Jacob Smith in fourth. This was a class that provided some exciting & well executed racing. While Junior Yamaha was light on numbers; it sure wasn’t on talent & the drivers had to work hard to gain every advantage they could. Rhys Tinney prevailed, taking the win from Shaun Grocock & CJ Sinclair. Largest class of the day – both in numbers & horsepower were the KZ2’s. This was an especially exciting class because of the arrival of a couple of juniors who have made the move directly to shifters from the junior ranks; Aaron Wilson & Brad Hicks did themselves proud with their first outings in this class. Ryan Urban dominated the results with 3 wins & a second over the four heats contested, setting another track record in the process. Scott Reddish finished second with Ryan Grant third. Kartsport Auckland extends its thanks & acknowledges the support of the sponsors of this event: Alpha Karts, Cosgrave Awards, Lascom Auckland, MG Tyres, Right Karts. The club also thanks the competitors for their support, especially those who travelled from out of town - & island!
