Eighteen Clubs were represented from Whangarei in the North to Invercargill in the South, including the sports newest Club - Formula S KartSport. Also in attendance was the patron, Mrs Norma Triplow-Sanders, the elected Executive, the Treasurer John Vickers and the Development and Administration Manager, Robert Hutton. Life member, John Lennox, officially opened Conference on Saturday morning on behalf of Norma who was unable to attend the opening session. National President, Bob Cunningham, presented his report and following this the Minutes of the 2004 National Conference were adopted. The Treasurer, John Vickers, presented the financial accounts and answered questions from the floor. Vice President, Wayne McNee, then reported on the progress to date of the Strategic Plan (2001-2006) and presented the revised strategic plan for 2005-2009. Wayne then lead a open forum discussion where aspects of the revised plan were commented on and discussed by delegates. At the conclusion of the 1 hour forum, Wayne asked for and received confirmation from delegates that the revised plan was to be adopted with minor additions that had come from the open forum. Executive Member, Lance Hickey, then made a presentation on electronic timing and a transponder proposal. Following the presentation Lance opened the floor to debate and input from delegates. At the conclusion of this debate a number of motions were put forward from the floor and voted on. The result of these motions was that KartSport New Zealand will now investigate options for funding and confirm quotes for the transponders and equipment. Clubs then moved that, subject to acceptance of these quotes the proposal should then be moved to implementation. Following a break for lunch, Jayne Kernohan, Program Manager for the New Zealand Sports Drug Agency, made a very informative presentation about how the NZSDA operates and how they will work with KartSport New Zealand. Dave Adams, Senior Relationship Manager from SPARC then introduced Don Tricker who made a presentation about the SPARC high performance programme and coaching competitors and high performance squads. This was then followed by a presentation from Nikki Urwin, a Motorcycling New Zealand High Performance coach and a current KartSport competitor. Nikki explained how Motorcycling NZ had created and implemented a coaching program at the 'grass roots' level of the sport and then evolved the program into a High Performance Program focusing on a small select group of elite riders. Nikki's experience and participation in the program together with his knowledge of KartSport through his competitive involvement, made it easy for Nikki to demonstrate how such a program could be considered and implemented by KartSport New Zealand. Following Nikki's presentation there was a panel discussion with both Don and Nikki answering a number of questions from the floor. Following the afternoon tea break, Graham Wilcox, representing Yamaha, made a short presentation to delegates and announced that Yamaha intended to become more involved with KartSport through sponsorship. Graham also announced that Yamaha would be sending a representative from New Zealand to Japan in 2006 to compete at a major event close to the Yamaha factory in Japan. Following Grahams announcement, Bob Cunningham, National President, thanked Graham for Yamaha's commitment and confirmed that the competitor to represent New Zealand in Japan in 2006 would be the winner of the Senior 100cc Yamaha Light class at the 2006 National Sprint Championship. Ian Love, National Steward, then made a presentation to delegates regarding the setting of annual event calendars. John Vickers then presented another view on the same subject, providing delegates with a number of options to consider for the future. Delegates then broke in North and South Island groups and worked to formulate an event calendar for 2006 for all non Club day events. Following these individual work groups, Greg Neaves, Executive Member, then lead a forum to finalise details and dates from all Clubs. A motion was then passed that, subject to local council approvals, this calendar would be adopted for 2006. Lacom Motorsport and Dunlop Tyres hosted a happy hour to conclude the first day. Day two began at 8.15am with a 'roll call' of delegates. Each Club delegate was then invited to make a 5 minute presentation to Conference covering such things as what they had done well and what they could have done better over the past 12 months as well as the Clubs priorities and views for KartSport New Zealand for the next 12 months. These presentations were extremely positive and helped all Clubs get an idea of what other Clubs were doing as well as providing valuable feedback to the KartSport New Zealand Executive. Following morning tea, Mike Tunney, Executive member and Chairman of the Rules Sub Committee, presented an update on the change to the Codes, Rules and Specifications process. Discussion from Clubs followed with the general consensus that the process was good however more information about Clubs decision making was required to be submitted to the Rules Sub Committee and following decisions on each rule proposal better information regarding how and why each decision was made needs to be made available back to Clubs for review. There were a total of 3 Notices of Motion. Two from Auckland were withdrawn by the Auckland delegate and the third from the Executive, which removed a redundant clause from the Constitution, was passed unanimously.
