Supreme Kart Supplies WPKA Gold Star Series
Round 1 - Wellington

Heavy overnight rain and early persistent drizzle couldn’t dampen a warm, sunny conclusion to the first round of the Supreme Kart Supplies Goldstar Series at KartSport Wellington’s CRC Raceway, Kaitoke, north of Upper Hutt on November 21.

Karl Wilson leads Danny Picard (Open)

KartSport Wellington Club President Gary Wilson said “The club had done a lot of work  reconstructing the pit facilities prior to the first round of the series. These underwent a successful trial and are now ready for the upcoming Paymark CIK Trophy of New Zealand meeting scheduled for 28, 29 & 30 January, 2011”.

85 competitors turned out for the start of the 51st running of this annually contested series, run at the four circuits located around the lower North Island.

Local driver Josh Donohue, in only his second full season karting completed the win in the Cadet class ahead of Nick Wiltshire (Hawkes Bay) and Logan Keats (Wellington). Zane Riddick (Taranaki), Nick Evans and Kaleb Ngatoa (both Manawatu) were next in line in this very closely fought class.

On the day, Mathew Podjursky (Taranaki) emerged from the field of 15 to take top spot in Junior Restricted. Dylan Drysdale (Manawatu) finished second. Trey Nairn (Hawkes Bay) and Jacob Cranston (Manawatu) were next in line. These young drivers showed real class carried forward from their days in Cadets.

Scott Williams (Taranaki) came out on top in Junior Yamaha, followed by Josh Drysdale (Manawatu) in second and Aaron Marr (Taranaki) third ahead of Maddy Wise (Hawkes Bay) fourth.

Clubsport 120 was dominated by Shaun Clark (Manawatu) who but for one bad lap at the end of the first heat would have completed a clean sweep. However the on track rivalry amongst all the competitors made for great viewing with loads of jockeying for positions. Second went to Daniel Sneddon with Peter Dicks third (both Manawatu).

Much of last season’s juniors (with a few others) fought out the premiere Yamaha Light class with KartSport Wellington’s Patrick Davy completing the win ahead of Brad Still (Taranaki) and Daniel Rine (Manawatu).

Brendon Hart (Manawatu) used all his experience and guile to win Yamaha Heavy. Taranaki’s Aaron deRidder was second and Shaun Reay (Hawkes Bay) slotted into third.

Nick Wilshire won the Cadet Grand Prix ahead of Nick Evans (Manawatu) and Logan Keats. Next in line were Kaleb Ngatoa, Josh Donohue and Rianna Omeara-Hunt (Wellington).

The JR GP was won by Trey Nairn from Jacob Cranston and Thomas Ingram (Manawatu). James Webb (Manawatu) finished fourth from Dylan Drysdale in fifth.

Josh Drysdale cruised to first in the Junior GP. Aaron Marr second and Scott Williams third completed the trifector.

Final event of the day was the Open GP won by Karl Wilson from Daany Picard. Grant Bristow (Wellington) came in third. First Yamaha honours went to Jaden Hardy (Manawatu).

A superb days racing from all the competitors was the feature of this event. The WPKA and its member clubs have started on another great series. Supreme Kart Supplies as premier sponsors along with support from MIR Racewear, Right Karts, Kiwi Kart, Napier Collision Repair Centre, Turbo Traders, Lascom Motorsport and Manawatu Toyota have ensured a huge prize pool benefiting all entrants.
