Bruce the Man to Beat in the Open Class
at Kartsport New Zealand Dirt Nationals

Whangarei's Bruce James proved to be the man to beat in the Open class at this year's Industrial Traders-sponsored KartSport New Zealand National Dirt Championship meeting at Rotorua's Paradice Valley Speedway oval on Saturday 22 November 2008.

After finishing third behind Dion Kendall and Michael Grimshaw at last year's Dirt Nats, James stepped up to the number one spot this year, claiming the Open class title from Hamish Scott and Daniel Samuelson.

The Kendall name, already a famous one in Speedway circles, remained well represented, however, with Leyton Kendall winning the Senior 100cc Yamaha Heavy title from Clinton Fell and top local driver Paul Mabey.

In the other senior classes contested Hamilton's Mike Grimshaw added the New Zealand Dirt title to the North Island one he won in the 125cc Rotax Max Heavy class at the recent North Island Sprint championships while Bay of Plenty driver Daniel Dufty proved too good for club mate Justin Herbert and KartSport Mt Wellington's Jason Butterworth in Senior 100cc Yamaha Light.

In the Junior classes, Auckland's Levi Madsen-Prinn won Junior 100cc Yamaha from Wellington's James Hadley and Fulton Penny from the Eastern Bay of Plenty club, local club member Stephen Appleton won Junior Restricted 100cc Yamaha from the Bay of Plenty's Michael Scott and KartSport Mt Wellington's Stephen Kelly while Samuel Warner from the Hawke's Bay successfully defended his 2007 title in Cadet.
