Top Half Series 2009 - Round 2

The Top Half Series for 2009 moved south to Tokoroa for Round 2 on June 14th.

Not quite the number of Cadets at Round 2 but still a substantial field of 23 making, again, an oversubscribed field under the Top Half race format and forcing six separate heats to be contested prior to the final.  It was Chelsea Herbert & Alex Edwards to the fore once again; although the pair did not actually meet up on the race track until their final two heats and then the final.  BoP’s Connor Hayes’ consistency paid off & he snared third place overall just ahead of club mate Josh Adlam.  Herbert leads the series from Edwards with Mathew Podjursky holding third.

Junior Restricted was the second class of the round to oversubscribe with 21 drivers.  It was Whangarei’s Thomas McLean who had the measure of the class this time round taking the win from Maddison Wise & Stephen Appleton, who consolidated his first round performance & now leads the series.

Another driver consolidating his Round 1 performance was Mt Wellingtons Daniel Colville in the Junior Yamaha class; finishing 2nd at Round 2 behind Daniel Kinsman but taking the top spot overall in the series to date.  Nicholas Carpenter & Corey Green stepped up to the plate at Tokoroa finishing 3rd & 4th.

The Formula Junior class saw a clean sweep win go to Daniel Connor.  Shaun Varney & Shaun Morris battled it out for the minor placings, finishing 2nd equal.

Yamaha Light saw the first leg of the John van Bommel double; winning all but one heat.  Local representative David Meszaros took 2nd place from Stan Tangaroa-Green, who set a new lap record in the third heat.  The honour was brief however, with Tyler Richardson lowering it even further in the fourth heat.

Darren Aislabie proved why he is currently NZ#2 in this class; no finishes outside the top two and a comfortable round win from Shane Hodgson & Lance Fisher.  Fisher showing a vast improvement from his round 1 result and Hodgson now leading the series with a healthy points total.

John van Bommel did make it a clean sweep in Rotax Light taking the win from Matthew Bufton, who set a new track record in the final, and Matthew Griffin.  Van Bommel now leads the series from Griffin with Matt Hollier in third.

Bradley Tyrrell was untouchable on his home track in the Rotax Heavy class, winning all races and extending his overall series lead.  Mt wellington duo Peter Ball & David Waldmeyer finished 2nd & 3rd and subsequently have moved up the ranks in the overall standings.

In The Great Clash Of The Clubs, after two rounds Rotorua/Taupo is leading the points tally from Mt Wellington and Bay of Plenty.

Round 3 of the 2009 Top Half Series is to be held at Hamilton on Sunday July 26th.
