| Vintage Karts Enjoy Outing at Hawkes Bay | |

A number of Vintage karts enjoyed a great weekend at the Hawkes Bay fourth round of the Goldstar series on May 3rd and 4th. |

There were 11 vintage karts with 2 from Wellington and 1 from Auckland. Phil Davy brought his Dart twin and David Hepburn’s Rotary/Zip and Warren Wilson came all the way from Auckland and despite having a few problems which were sorted on the day with some assistance went home with a very broad grin. In the grin stakes it was a race off between Warren, Denis Churcher and Neville Overend who had his first outing with his Mac/Techno. Garth Schlierike also had his Komet/Zip going for the first time and going very well. John Crossman had his 125/Sirio going and hopefully has been convinced to get the 125 off it and convert it back to its original glory as some of us can remember it in it’s original black and gold livery. Denis Churcher had his 2nd run in the ex Lester Dart and the Gough Family lent Graeme Sutton their Dart Twin. William Pearson missed the first session when his kart went on a callout with his dad but made up for it in the lunch break. Doc Murray also had a huge grin especially once he had showered everyone in oil clearing the very rich Mac/Dart. Mark Jenkinson ran around helping a few people get going and tuned and didn’t richen up his kart promptly nipping a piston early in the first session while tootling around having an absolute ball (until that happened) but was able to change the engine and put Mark Wilson out in the kart for the lunch time session. Jenkinson said “I still think I am going through a batch of ‘alky’ carbs and will be happy when I can finally get a pair that work reasonably well together”. Mark Wilson enjoyed his run in Jenkinson’s twin and is looking forward to getting his K88/Zip finished which just didn’t quite make this event. It is believed there is another kart to come to the Bay for Allan McNichol which will have a BM 100 on it. Pete Osborne’s Margay is getting closer and should be there for Blossom and Graeme the Guru Sutton has his Zip to take home and restore while Jenkinson should have his Dart single ready in September. We must thank Geoff King and the Hawkes Bay club for the opportunity to run at the meeting, we were welcome and provided plenty of interest. There were a few “comments” about the Vintage Karts being allowed on the track at a permitted meeting and other than lunch time “when the track is closed.” Discussions with National Steward Laurie Lester and President Lance Hickey have highlighted the need for our basic rules which will give us some stature and cover these concerns. Roll on Blossom and looking forward to doubling the number of karts on the track by then. Supplied by Mark Jenkinson on behalf of all Vintage Kart enthusiasts. |
